What’s up everybody!

You know the feeling when you step into a place feel a special electrifying atmosphere of creativity, a place with certain kind of energy to it that just seems to draw you in? Well, that’s what I felt when entering Hana Karim’s new atelier in Ljubljana and I enjoyed every second of the morning spent in there.
So who exactly is Hana Karim? She’s the kind of urban chick you might run into when roaming the streets of Ljubljana, the kind that is driven, creative, curious and trendy but most importantly the girl behind the amazing ceramic tableware recognizable by the intuitive designs. Looking up to Japanese masters, her works are full of character, emotion, aesthetic and with all that she still claims she’s just at the start of her journey. You always have to put long hours, passion and focus into what you’re doing and Hana is not lacking that, people don’t see the countless days she’s locked in her atelier shaping her feelings and experiences into ceramic creations, but that’s the beauty of it. You see a girl smiling on the front steps of her atelier having some coffee accompanied by her loyal dog May and you see beautiful handcrafted ceramic tableware, everything in between is and should be covered by a veil of mystery. Without further a do, here’s a glimpse into Hana’s mind.

– Why ceramics?
Ceramics is an incredible substance. It’s capable of unexplainable transformations in a relatively short period of time and all that with the help of factors that are simple and essential for life – earth, water, air and fire. I’ll tell you a funny moment, which there were quite a few in my life: when I tried using the potter’s wheel for the first time I was a mess. Nothing went according to what I expected! The potter’s wheel isn’t something you learn over night; you need patience and a lot of it. And I try that, with my occasional uncontrollable bursts and fire in my hands. As you can guess I lose the battle, get angry, throw clay at the wall and cry of frustration. Then one day – click! I manage to center that spinning pile of clay. I swear – that moment was like some out-of-earth energy aligned into the center of that mud. I slowly pass from fire in my hands to air in my soul. Ceramics directly helps me transform my own mindset.

– What does your own atelier mean for your work?
My atelier is my love, my home; a place where all the energies I love the most in this world mix.

– What’s your creative process like?
Hmm, it depends on the approach I use. If the end product is in my head then it’s a mind process, with sketches and preparation. If it’s just the “need to put something out there” then it’s a journey into the unknown, an experiment, a surprise. I like the last one better for sure.

– Do aliens exist?
I don’t know if it’s actually aliens, but there is some kind of energy above us; the kind that you cannot explain rationally.

– If ceramics were “off the table” and you had to choose a different medium for your expression, what would you choose and why?
Haha, don’t ask that please, it pushes me into a desperate moment. Nothing. I’d pack my bags and go on a trip. Observe, think, meditate. Then, when I’d reach calmness, I’d get an idea. Maybe I’d first work behind a counter – find a “real job” you know?

– What role does Instagram play in the promotion of your products?
Instagram is a tool, but it’s not an entirely real picture. I post less and less personal stuff and that kind of bothers me. Instagram story helps me to reveal some part of the process, a moment I wouldn’t necesserily post, but my Instagram is mostly showing finished products lately. I miss more of myself in there because my products are merely an extension of me. I feel and live these objects and that’s directly linked to my lifestyle, waht I wear, what I eat, who I hang out with, etc..

7
– With what kind of philosophy do you approach your creating?
Keep it simple with a twist.

16
– Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope ceramics won’t be off the table yet because I think that’s the realistic timeframe in which I can manage to get to the skill level that I want. I try to not burden myself with the future, especially not this longterm. I rather set short-term goals – I much prefer small victories

No to sem občutil ob vstopu v novi ljubljanski atelje Hane Karim in užival sem v vsaki sekundi dopoldneva preživetega tam.

Haha, ne sprašuj tega prosim, ker me potisne v tak res obupan moment.

Vedno manj osebnih stvari objavljam in to me nekoliko moti. Pogrešam malo več sebe tam notri, kajti moji izdelki so le podaljšek mene same.

Keep it simple with a twist.

Postavljam si raje kratkoročne cilje – majhne zmage so mi veliko bolj ljube.
