Exploring Europe’s Abandoned Treasures

Maša Kores is a young photographer whose artistic development was following a well known path of taking photos of family members, the seaside, plants etc. until one decisive moment, when she saw the works of a certain englishman exploring abandoned buildings. After a bit of research the decision was made and a path was decided. It all started with exploring around Ljubljana and the first building was an abandoned hotel. Her first steps were unsure and a bit frightened (abandoned hotels tend to creep you out, yeah) but the fascination soon took over, the remains of furniture, pictures still hanging on the walls, and the specific smell. The thrill of exploring a place like that immidiately created a craving for more.

First it was abandoned building all over Ljubljana, then all over Slovenia and soon Maša hopped over our borders and got to real exploring. She is the only slovenian photographer (at least known to me) that takes these specific kind of photos which got her work published in National Geographic, got her a couple of solo exhibitions and other mentions in printed medias. Her work may seem easy, but I can assure you that it is the exact opposite. Often times you have to get creative and athletic to get into certain buildings, you have to overcome personal fears and be really careful not to get hurt as well. Also people will often mistake you for a vandal if the see you creeping around, which might result in some issues with the authorities. But as Maša says, she has 2 ground rules: Never damage anything (if you can’t enter the building, turn around and leave) and never steal anything – “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but fooprints”alone-to-face-a-hostile-place-a-moments-peace-aint-coming-the-constant-cold-cracking-your-bones-the-stench-of-life-worth-living
